Reread while actively doing literature analysis of it: 5 ⭐
Perfectly done plot wise, character wise, pacing wise and theme wise. I personally wish that it'd explored the therapeutic effects of storytelling more but it did technically touch on that with every aspect of story(telling) & censorship I can think of so it'll just get that 5 star. This is one of those books (ie Babel) that have a much higher enjoyment when read for literature analysis compared to when read for enjoyment. Masterfully written, given just how filled it was with wordplay and themes and my kudos to Salman Rushdie for still having it read like a fairytale & keeping the humor. I hope this book helped him while he dealt with living with the fatwa.

1st read: 2.5 ⭐
If this book is satire, then I rate it 4.75 stars (originally 5 but minus 0.25 bc is it really satire if I can't even tell that it's satire)

This has no clear theme, the most typical plot ever with no twist/turn/something to set it apart, climaxes that don't feel earned, an ending that did not deliver, a rushed romance, character arcs that make no sense, humour that falls flat and does not answer the central question of the book (why do stories matter if they're fake) & has a setup that doesn't make any sense
if Rashid didn't cancel his story water subscription, then why did it run out
. Also the tropes used are not my taste.
