This review is for the BBC radio production from 1981. Obviously this an abridgement for Radio, and generally it was well done, though some of the singing felt a bit dated. It was a bit jarring that Ian Holm was Frodo in this, when I am used to him playing Bilbo in the film. 

Unfortunately there are lots of battles in this book, which it is not very easy to portray in a radio play, so the impact was somewhat lessened due to this. Also, trying to condense the whole book into just over 3 hours means a lot needs to be cut, so it felt like a whistle stop tour of key moments, but some of those moments were very well done. Thankfully I practically know the whole story off by heart so it didn’t matter that lots was skipped, I knew what was going on.
