Still a great book…I just didn’t connect with it as much as the others in the series, probably because there isn’t the motherhood aspect in this one. I still love the friend dynamic of the 3 main women that the series is based on!

This is the second book I’ve read this year that highlights the everyday struggle of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, and it sincerely does not get easier to read, but I’m so glad I trusted Kennedy Ryan because if there’s something she does extremely well is to write in such a way that not only honors the experience but also weaves in painful and healing moments that both make the reader smile while breaking our heart. I cried, I smiled, I groaned, and I laughed—all of this is just part of reading Kennedy Ryan’s writing, it just so freaking good. She’s a gift to the genre.

This is not an easy story by any means, but I was rooting for Hendricks and Mav throughout the entire book, and I’ll admit I was hesitant at first because when the story begins Mav is technically in a relationship, at least publicly he is, so I was unsure how it would be, but it was fine. Hendricks is a bad ass talent manager who is about to break into an executive producing role on one of her client’s upcoming projects while Mav is the exboyfriend to Hendricks’ new executive producing partner. They are kismetly connected and each brings a spark to the other they didn’t realize they were kissing. A lot of the story centers on Hendricks resisting the attraction and Mav trying to get her to see that they’re worth a shot as a couple.

I did an immense rice read of the book, so I read it while also listening to the audiobook. I strongly recommend doing this—the two narrators that Ryan’s team chose to do read this book did a fantastic job! Wesleigh Siobhan’s voice is so bright and emotive—it brought Hendricks’ energy out, and Jakobi Diem’s performance of Mav was meltingly lovely especially when he’s reading Ryan’s work. There’s this one scene where Mav is reflecting on the nature of love and grief and Diem’s reading of Ryan’s writing just made me fall apart in tears:

“Are there words in the lexicography of human emotion for how it feels to lose the love of your life? It’s articulated in wails and tears, in the impenetrable loneliness that comes with losing such a vital part of who you are. Your person, closer than anyone to you, is now irretrievable, beyond reach. A mourning with no sunrise. You never know what to say when faced with that kind of devastation. I’ve learned to say nothing at all no platitude or condolence could make it any better. All I can do is be human enough to listen and try to understand” (336)
I can’t give this book high enough praises. Read it!

I really love Kennedy Ryan’s books. This was a nice followup to the series. She writes women so well. I appreciate that they are not all “oh wow is me” or too frail and weak to take care themselves. I love that they are smart and hard working and willing to ask for what they want. And I love the way this author writes about money and rich people. Her books are always well done.
