A little cheesy in some places, but great for fans of modern fairytale-like stories.

A lovely rags-to-royalty book! Izumi finds out she is the daughter of the Crown Prince of Japan and it's just wacky fun from there. Jean's voice for Izumi reminds me of some of the funniest teenagers I've taught. It's hard to write as a teen, even harder to nail down the irreverent humor of gen Z. But Jean does it. I loved the way Izumi searches for her identity as a Japanese American and how to balance getting to know a father she never knew. It's just a sweet read all the way through.

I think the weakest point in the book is the romance. I think I would have loved another few scenes between Izumi and Akio between them being enemies to them being all cute with each other. However, they're still a very cute couple, and the ending had me smiling all the way through.

What a delightful and sweet book! I practically inhaled this, not only because of Izumi's voice (she's hilarious and so blunt), but also the tropes (royal/bodyguard romance!!! clothes sharing!! the Asian Girl Gang/female friendships!!!!) and certain characters.

I am South Asian, not East Asian, but oh MAN I related so much to Izumi. The name keychains, being raised/living in a mostly white and conservative town, trying to be "enough" for two or more cultures... This book was so wonderful and yet so cathartic.

And the ending was lovely and stood well on its own, I gotta say that I am so relieved there's a second book! Not ready to let go of this universe/the characters, tbh.

Also who do I have to bribe to get a follow up book about Izumi's parents??? They were too adorable.

Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an alc of this book!

After living 18 years without knowledge of her father, Izumi stumbles upon a note in her mother's room that reveals her father is crown prince of Japan, and she is secretly a princess. When her father finds out, she is invited on a trip to Tokyo and has a whirlwind two weeks trying to discover who she is.

This book was very adorable. I seriously love Izumi as a main character.  She is so funny, and bold, and interesting to read about. I loved her personality, and that was definitely my favorite part of this book. I also really enjoyed how everything happened with her family. We were able to see Izzy's struggles to fit in, the way she was tried and tested, and her spirit and attitude to never give up even when it got rough! I really loved that.

I honestly didn't think this book needed a romance sub-plot. The romance was cute enough, but I thought the characters didn't have enough time together to really develop that relationship enough to make it worth it. I would have enjoyed this book more if the romance was left out and it really just focused on her family and culture and friends instead.

All in all, a great read! And the narration is excellent.
