When I heard of the book I had not heard that is was a  reprint of a 1990s series about the first intifada. The narrator, a Joe Sacco persona, starts out as a naive observer simply reporting what anyone tells him, Israeli and Palestinian alike. He has a bit of fun poking at the journalist who seeks the darker stories because they sell better, yet he finds more dark stories than he seeks. After his time in Gaza he tries to correct the versions he hears from others.

The graphic format adds to the presentation degrees of monotony, of horror, of calm conversation--in short visually creates the atmosphere in which the experience unfolds.
