I really liked the general idea behind this and the plot, and how the FMC as a painter fits into this. I adore false marriage tropes and thought the general plot/romance was set up well in the first 1/3 of the book. It’s also a very light read and would be suitable for YA.
However once they got to the dragon world things really slowed down. I didn’t really feel the romance develop and didn’t feel any chemistry between the main characters which was a problem bc much of the plot focussed on the romance as a device for defeating the main villain. Instead we got a lot of sections describing the magic mechanisms and painting but didn’t feel any character development.
And this may be bc I haven’t read any of the other books (although understood this to be a standalone that could be read without the others) but I really struggled to picture and understand the underwater world. How the turtles and sharks looked for example to do the things described, and how liquids worked underwater.
I may read six crimson cranes but personally this didn’t vibe for me.

This book is like a doorway to childhood, when you used to listen to fairytales. And also I really appreciate Tru as a main character! Modern YA female protagonists are almost identical, but Tru doesn't fall into that mold. She's witty, funny, and determined, doing everything she can to ensure her family's well-being. I miss characters like that, so following her story was a pure joy!

A fun new standalone set in the world of Six Crimson Cranes. I hope we get to see more of this world from Lim. Her writing is very vivid- there were moments where I felt I was seeing the world Lim created. This story is a Beauty & the Beast retelling set primarily in an underseas world. The unique setting made this book standout among other B&B retellings. It draws key elements from the original fairytale but has enough of its own unique flair to not feel repetitive in this saturated market. This books has great characters, an engaging plot, and some interesting twists.
