It felt like reading a re-telling of a classic fairytale in a way I enjoyed; Lim wears her inspirations on her sleeve with this book, while still doing something nicely distinct with them. I enjoy the setup between the two leads, though I don't know if I'd call some of their relationship development earned. The tone of the ending fits the story's tone well, though, and I overall had a great time.

This novel is an absolute masterpiece. I have a soft spot for beauty and the beast retelling anyway, and this one took my breath away. There were plenty of nods to the original fairy tale that only someone familiar with the text would appreciate. There was innovation that meant even the final scenes were a mystery until the end.
Lim writes beautifully. Her descriptions are colourful and vivid. Initially I was concerned about the similarities to The Dragon’s Promise, but the novel took a diversion that meant that whilst the setting was familiar, the story was unique.
This story of familial love, loss, romantic love, adversity and beauty is a must read for all fairy tale lovers.

Thank you to NetGalley and to Hodder & Stoughton for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Elizabeth Lim has done it again!
A breathtakingly woven story, A Forgery of Fate reads just like a fairytale.
The story follows Tru, a forger of artwork. To save her family, she makes a deal with a dragon… but how does she break his curse?
This book had it all. Slow burn romance, dragons, mermaids, adventure, demons, a curse to break… and oh my goodness, THE FOOD DESCRIPTIONS. It actually made me hungry every time I picked it up to read.
Shout out to Shani, as we love a sarcastic sidekick 😂

While it wasn't a bad book, I am glad I got it from the library rather than ordering a copy.
The writing could have used more detail, I couldn't really picture a lot of the settings and characters. Then there was a twist that the author made work but didn't feel all that justified. I struggled to believe there was chemistry between the main characters for the first near 300 pages even though I liked the love interest.
That said, I did like the characters and the few details we did get. The pre-climax action scene was really well done. The main character was extremely clever in the moment and the logic behind how she came up with the solution was excellent.
I also think it's being marketed to the correct age range, something I get unnecessarily furious about what it comes to YA.
I would recommend this to the 14+ YA demographic or anyone who's trash for a Beauty and the Beast retelling like I am.
