i've been really enjoying this series so far, way more than i thought i would. the relationships between all the characters feel real and relatable and i felt sad for gwen when everyone was turning against her. her despair and fear always gets to me as if i'm going through it all right there with her. this was another compelling installment in the series and i'm curious to see where it goes from here!

A star off for the gore and the language, but definitely an edge-of-your-seat thriller. The author literally brought me to tears when the kids were telling Gwen they didn't want her anymore and the awful things they were saying to her, she is that good at portraying emotions.

Caine does her research and that is awesome. For a book set in the South, it's rare that the authors/editors/publishers don't make us all sound like the Beverly Hillbillies with the dialogue. Other than describing Rivard's New Orleans accent (which was great for the imagery because it helped paint the picture of how oily the guy is), all dialogue is straightforward, no forced dialect or other attempts at various nuances of the English language in the different regions of America. Also pretty great that she added the detail that so many streets in Atlanta have Peachtree in the name; they totally do!! This was all especially refreshing as the last book I read was set in Georgia and was written by an author who it seems had never been to Georgia before, but only just found out last week that it was even a state. Refreshing, and gives me even more respect for this author.

Phewwww this was a rough one, and not an easy read (though I couldn't stop). It's a testament to the author that I pushed through one of my least favorite plot devices because I had to know what happened, and cared so much about the outcome. Excellent writing, pacing, characterization, and imagery (as horrifying as it was). 4.25 stars.

This one invoked so many emotions, I did not want to put it down last night but I am glad I did. If I had finished this one right before laying down I would not have been able to sleep with how tense I was at the end. Thinking I may binge the rest of the series next month. This month is too full. Just-
Ahhhhh
