This one definitely didn't land as well as Henry's other work. She's known for her dark retellings of classic fairytales but I think this one strayed too far across the 'dark' line into 'gratuitous violence against women that makes me feel icky' territory. Some reviews will say thats the point to this world, but my personal tolerance level is just lower than where this book goes. The actual plot is a cool take on the classic Alice in Wonderland tale and I really liked how she worked many of the traditional characters in. The ending was wildly anti-climatic however, and that definitely knocked another star off my ratings for this book. A lot of hype for two Big Bads who then ended not so much with a bang but with a whimper. Again, maybe that was the point to the story, but it just felt like I'd waded through a lot of pretty vile scenes of women getting beaten to not then have my big dramatic pay off to make that worth it.

Was really enjoying but then it got too gross. I understand the need for horror and shock factor but it gets to a point where it's not important to the story it's just awful. Don't get me started with the hatter+Alice romance that's just not right

This book was brimming with literally the most horrific things, honestly and deeply disturbing but the book was great and I'll read the others.
I enjoyed and couldn't put this book down despite how difficult the subject matter isnfornme.

I don't approve of rape as a form of entertainment, it's pervasive and unhealthy and unnecessary.. But, it can be done without being a spectacle.
It is refreshing in its way to read a book where sexual assault isn't a token bit of entertainment, even though this book contained honestly the most horrifying ideas it was written as a character arc and didn't feel cheap or contrived. It felt raw and honest and awful and distinctly matter of fact, much the same way it actually does, only exaggerated to be fantastical. This was kindof a rough read but it was well worth it and hats off to Christina Henry.
