I think if I had read this during the Twilight boom, I would have really liked it. I did like getting to see the perspective and lives of other vampires.

Let me preface this by saying I didn't know it was a Twilight book when I started reading it. Only at the end (when Bree meets her fate), I realized 'wait a minute, Bella?'
I like the 'romance' between Bree and the love interest (forgot his name bc it's been THAT long), it was a nice short read, even though everything confused me and I felt like I had to 'know' most of this stuff already. The writing style was okay.

It was a foolish thing to hope that something good could've come from this. I know that S.Meyer can make minor characters interesting and fascinating, giving them tragic backstories that make you care about them. That is probably the best thing I can say about this novella. I did end up feeling sympathetic toward Bree, and her tale was truly tragic.
The problem? For some reason, S.Meyer felt the need to add a love story. The "chemistry" between Bree and Diego came up so suddenly and was given almost no development. I almost wish this wasn't in Bree's perspective; then at least more of Diego's personality would've been fleshed out, so the reader would understand why he was calm and so trusted among the newborns. As it was, it seemed like his only purpose was to win over Bree enough for her to experience heartbreak when he died.
I did find the newborn vampire world a nice perspective, and Bree's outsider view of the Cullens was interesting. The usual writing problems were still apparent here. I can't believe that I actually wanted more out of this than what was given. This was finally the chance for a character-driven story, and as usual the reader is left feeling disappointed in the lost potential.

I liked the book for what it was. I enjoyed getting more perspective on what life was like as a newborn and getting insights on what was going on behind the scenes. I did enjoy the story. I felt like it gave closure with Bree, and I feel more at peace with her ending than before reading the book.
