Densest graphic novel I've read. Something new with each re-read

Okay so.... this was incredible.
I've always supported the belief that comics count as reading, but this... this is literature. The amount of thought and detail put into it is beyond amazing.
The only thing that put me off was the handwritten font that made it hard to concentrate. But other than that, it's a remarkable work of art that should easily be counted among the most well-done comics in history.

Brill pants

Abandonado.
No he podido con las páginas y páginas describiendo la relación de la arquitectura y la masonería.

Very, very good. Creepy, exciting, fucked-up. Found it quite confusing to keep track of the characters. Reading the appendix at the end of the book at the end of each chapter would have been a good idea. Will read more Alan Moore.

God this has to be about the most boring thing I've read this year. Well, I read maybe ...20% of it ...then I started skimming it ...then by about the 60% point I was literally just looking at the pictures because I cannot explain with words how MIND NUMBINGLY DULL THIS IS. I'm sure I'll get tons of shit for this, especially because Moore famously hates all adaptations of his work, but just go watch the movie lmao.

I just ...don't even understand the point of it because all that stuff you find out at the end of the movie is literally the FIRST CHAPTER in this so like ...you know the entire plot twist and who committed the murders right from the start so all that's left is a bunch of pretentious rambling for 500 pages coupled with annoying sketchy black and white artwork and a lot of awkward sex scenes. Someone else said they thought it was 'intentionally unreadable' and I mean that does sound like Moore, but it's still a dick move and awful to read. Bleh.

A bit dense but done with a tremendous attention to detail. The annotations at the end of each volume really shed light on the story of Jack the Ripper whether you agree who the killer may or may not have been. Brutal, chilling and well told.

He's just such a genius. And the best bit might be appendix two..."Truth is, this has never been about the murders, nor the killer nor his victims. It's about us. About our minds and how they dance. Jack mirrors our hysterias. Faceless, he is the receptacle for each new social panic."

I wish I had liked this as much as everyone else does. I 100% understand why people love this story. It just didn't do it for me.

I felt particular pieces were extra fluff that wasn't needed for the storyline, particularly the chapter where they are going around London and giving a little history tour. While I understand what he was doing, I also know that none of that information stuck with me at all, and I could still follow along easily.

It also felt like there were scenes there that were raunchy for the sake of being controversial, while the areas that I thought would be more grotesque were too dark to really see what was happening at the moment.

Again, all this can be seen as an artistic approach, which is why I 100% get why it is loved. I did appreciate the philosophical discussions given and the unique spins that he took on at the beginning and end of the story.

Overall it was okay. I might try to reread it sometime in the future to see if my feelings change at all!
