Onenof the finest literary adaptations about the events surrounding Jack the Ripper you are likely to read…

From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell is a well known work by a comic writer who only produces high quality concepts for the most part.

While the overall plot involves the Jack the Ripper murders, it’s a light element of a larger story about London (and England as a whole) at the time.

Throughout this lengthy graphic novel the size of a phone book you will learn about the historical geography of London, the supernatural architecture of the city, the secret dealings of Freemasons, the brutality of different tiers of London society, and just how dirty and uncomfortable a place it was…especially for those at the bottom.

The story drifts through a large number of characters that can be overwhelming at times…but it manages to hit and speculate on most of the “facts” of the Jack the Ripper case, suspects, victims, and those involved in the investigation at all levels (including the alleged coverup). The end of the book includes ample footnotes covering each reference by page for those who love annotations and might want to dive further into a ripperology rabbit hole.

A little more straightforward than I would like at times, but Moore’s mid level stuff is still better than most comic author’s greatest work.

I got the sense that, in some ways, Moore identified with Gull more than any other character in the story. The mysticism he introduces through Gull feels so specific and believable.

I couldn't finish it.

I like Micheal Moore, but I found this almost unreadable.

Wow- brilliant writing; graphics that made me pause and re-read or actually cringe. Very good, despite the horror.

it is possible that from the beginning, severian already had some presentiment of his future.
