I really hope Louise got therapy after all this. 8.5/10 loved the ending.

This book is really creepy. I don't know why I thought that it was a thriller, but it isn't; it's pure horror. There was a scene where I was grossed out by everything that was happening. I really like how the story develops and I enjoyed the ending. I RECOMMEND IT.

Para mi: Es la historia de Louise con su hermano Mark donde sus padres mueren en un accidente de auto y quieren vender la casa pero Pupkin (puppet) los quiere detener.

I couldn't put this book down. This is my first Grady Hendrix book and I'm glad I picked it! The atmosphere was very spooky, and there were a couple tense moments where I second-guessed reading this book at night in a quiet house. The main character, Louise, is not a very likable person. From the get-go, she is headstrong, argumentative and a control freak. However, I really appreciate the fact that she is a fleshed out character and that she does undergo pretty significant development as the story progresses. I really resonated with the sibling relationship with both her and Mark as well. Some secondary characters also had a decent amount of character development as well, and by the end of the book, I had some respect for the main characters involved.

The few  gripes I have are minor , but I really wished that the Mark and Louise dolls had mor  significance. Looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Upon finishing this book, I was able to put a rating number on it but was unable to bring myself to form a written review which could fully articulate my thoughts and opinions. Now that I’ve slept on it, here goes.

First, I may have overhyped this book in my head before picking it up which we all know isn’t always wise. I also had read one of the author’s other books, The Final Girls Support Group, and really enjoyed it so that added to my level of expectation. That being said, this book didn’t meet the arguably unfair mark I set for it. I liked a lot about this book though. I enjoyed the super bloody, and disturbing scenes layered in what felt like satire. Those parts were campy and childlike like Goosebumps but with an Evil Dead intensity. So at parts if you’re really visualizing what’s happening, you’re skin is crawling, your hand is to your mouth, and you’re also strangely laughing; or at the very least, smiling in jest. Have you ever seen the horror/comedy Krampus? This was SO similar in overall vibes and tones. No, it didn’t keep me up at night but it definitely left me feeling…unsettled.

Now here is where I had qualms. It doesn’t really pick up until about halfway through. It was a slow burn but once it ignites, you are drug through climax after climax until the ride finally comes to a halt. The biggest issue is that there are lulls between some of those big moments. I wonder if it was the author’s intention to keep pulling the reader around on unnecessary quests. It definitely adds a layer of frustration but I found myself thinking that this book could’ve been 100 pages less and would’ve still achieved what it was meant to.
There were some parts that didn’t really make sense. Mainly,
how did Poppy know to make the Pupkin puppet? How did that make it “haunted”. Also the brother making the masks and possibly killing people and animals? Then never investigating it to see if it actually happened? Maybe I missed something there.
Finally, I hated the characters. In the end I was rooting
for Pupkin/Freddie
These characters made horrible decisions, were pretty terrible people, and at a point you kind of wish for natural selection to take hold.
I can see how this book isn’t for everybody but for those who love diversity in your horror selections, it’s definitely worth a read. I also think it would make a good movie.
