Fellside is Carey's least engaging work I've encountered so far and I've read pretty much everything he's done.
Part prison drama, part court room drama, part ghost story, part murder mystery, part exploration of guilt, there's a lot of moving parts to Fellside but it takes considerable time for them to actually build up to anything.
Anyone expecting a riveting engrossing page turner with memorable characters, like the smash hit The Girl With All The Gifts, will likely be rather disappointed with Fellside because they are so completely and utterly different, willfully so I expect.
Carey is one of my favourite writers, check out the Felix Castor novels or his work in comics like Lucifer, The Unwritten or Hellblazer, but this really was rather underwhelming and it's not something I would recommend to friends.

I've grabbed this one expecting a riveting experience similar to The Girl With All the Gifts, but - oh, was I disappointed. I probably should have read the reviews first.
Mr Carey sure knows how to write so that it was easy to read, but the plot was so off-putting that I only managed to read a third of the book before realizing that I am wasting my time here.

Really disappointing book from Mike Carey. I am a big fan of his writing - both prose and for comics - but this was a dreary book that I would have put down long before the end if it was written by anyone else. Main issue was that I had no emotional or sympathetic connection to any of the characters and so had no investment in finding out more.
if Stephen King wrote an episode of Bad Girls.........
dark
emotional
mysterious
medium-paced

This book took a while to draw me in, but once there, I was hooked! I listened to it on Audible and the narration was haunting. It sticks to you.
4.5 Stars
Completely different from The Girl With All the Gifts but I really enjoyed this book. I didn't want to put it down. I figured out Moulson's error fairly early on but it didn't detract from the story for me.

Wow, this man knows how to write a book. If you liked The Girl With All The Gifts you'll like this. Like that, this book is totally different from anything else I've ever read, and the place is a much a character as the people. Not saying any more, read the book. His next can't come soon enough for me.
I can't do it. I'm 90% done with this book and I just don't want to waste any more of my time. The amount of suspense of disbelief I had to do to believe most of these character's actions and thoughts was more work than the reading itself.
The premise is great, the plot is fantastic, but the characters are unbelievable, which makes this book exhausting to get through.
I just don't care what happens to Jess anymore. She's cardboard-thin and annoying.

I liked this a lot. Think of The Green Mile with women, ghosts and in England. Usually I don't like ghost stories but this was more Stephen King than ghosts and a great read. Heads up that there is a lot of gory violence.
