Fellside

Jess Moulton is a heroin addict, who has been accused of causing the death of her neighbour, a ten year old boy called Alex Reed. Jess has no memory of setting the fire that caused Alex’s death and the horrendous burns to her and her ex-boyfriend John, but consumed with grief, she sabotages her barrister’s attempt to defend her.

Jess is sentenced and sent to Fellside, a remote prison on the Yorkshire moors. Jess decides to end her life, in a hunger strike. Weak, close to death, Jess crosses into the Other Place, where the spirit of a small child asks for her help.

This book was gripping, creepy, and quite emotional. There is a full supporting cast of prison guards, prisoners, and medical staff. In the background to the ghost story, a drug ring inside the prison pulls Jess into it’s web. Jess gets on the wrong side of the real power inside Fellside, putting several lives in very real danger.

The book wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but I enjoyed both the supernatural and crime aspects of the story. I highly recommend this book.

This was a frustrating read. Compelling, too, in places. But frustrating. It's more of a 3.5 for me.

DID NOT FINISH

I'd decided to try the audiobook of Fellside because I felt that I was unlikely to pick up the physical book. And, well, I tried. I really tried. I got a quarter of the way in, and I still had no idea what the fuck was going on.

Jess Moulson is arrested after setting a fire that killed her neighbour - a young boy. After deciding to go on a hunger strike in order to kill herself, she's transported to Fellside prison. And weird shit happens to her in her dreams or something. idk man, that's all I really got from it.

The narration was alright, but I feel as though there is just too much going on with different side characters and whatnot for it to be easy to follow without visually reading it.

Sadly, I still don't think that I'm ever going to pick up the physical book. Maybe one day I might read the ebook, but I have no inclination to do so any time soon.

" when the night goes on for ever and the little light of you is going out and there is nothing to grab on to. you just hold on tight."

I love this book way better than "The girl with all the gifts", which, in my opinion, was half baked. This book, on the other hand, couldn't be more perfect. I highly recommend it.

In a nutshell, This book was pretty strange, creepy and dark. It went to all the places I didn't think it would. There was so much going on in this book; there were druggies, drug trafficking, murders, court drama and most importantly ghosts.

Jess moulson had pleaded guilty for the murder she had no memory of committing, but the world around her had made her believe that she, somehow, was responsible for the death of an innocent child.

"Facts are in the outside world. You can verify them with your sense or objective tests. Truth is something people build inside their heads, using the facts as raw marerial. And sometimes the facts get bent or broken in the process."

In prison, to punish and free herself of the guilt she had been feeling, she declared a hunger strike. Little did she know that someone was there, with her, in her cell who wanted her to live. It's Alex- the kid she allegedly killed. Alex had forgotten everything, and he wanted to remember who he was and who killed him. He needed help that only Jess could provide.

dum spiro spero ( while I breath, I hope)

Alex made her see that she wasn't responsible for his death but someone else was. someone who needed to be held accountable. Jess makes it her life's mission to get out of the prison and find out the real culprit. But was Alex real? Or someone she made it up to comfort herself? And if the ghost was real, was it really a ghost of Alex or someone else? Did she shape the ramshackled body she saw in her dream into Alex? These questions haunts you till the very end.

Besides all this drama there was something else going on too, in the prison. The prison- fellside- was ruled by grace and delvin, who were using the inmates for drug trafficking. Those who tried to stand in the way of grace and delvin ended up dead so everyone follows their order now without questioning.

All these stories connects in the end and makes for a extremely terrifying and shocking climax.

The only complaint I have from this book is that it had too many characters and sometimes those characters were called with their first names, sometimes with their last names and sometimes with their nick names, It was hard to keep up, and it took me a while to get into the prison drama, I was more interested in jess's story.

If you are into horror, psychological thrillers and court drama you should definitely check this book out.

Definitely a disappointment after The Girl With All The Gifts. Most of the characters' motivations for their actions fell flat for me. I didn't feel the suspense that I believe Carey was trying to create.

VERY interesting book. Carey is brilliant at writing what feels familiar with a few twists and turns that are genuinely surprising and novel. The darkness of every context doesn't drag down the pace or make the characters too depressing to be captivating. I really dig the balance Carey achieves and the very intelligent plotting.
