Not anywhere as good as The Girl with All the Gifts.
Fucking. Brilliant. A fresh take on the classic ghost story
I didn't think I'd make it past the first 100 pages, the pacing was so slow. But once it picked up, so did my interest (at least marginally). The problem was, this book should have been better edited to remove at least 100 pages. In the end, it's bloated feel made for a much less enjoyable read.
I was never really sure of whether I should like Jess or not, and I felt almost indifferent to her sufferings in prison. The ending was meant to be a shocker, but I didn't really care. I wasn't as big of a fan of The Girl With All the Gifts as most others were, so maybe this author just isn't for me.

Interesting concept. Not sure I ever felt like I completely understood what was going on. I just tried to go along with the story -- enjoyed the characters.
I expected dark and perhaps brutal – it was after all taking place in a maximum security prison for serious offenders – but I wasn’t expecting the supernatural element. Normally, that would have immediately turned me off but it was so well done and so almost believable that I continued reading. Besides, by that time I was already hooked by Jess. Fellside is a powerfully written story about drugs, love and hate, and power and corruption. It is an interesting look at the workings inside a prison and an equally interesting study of the human soul.
This was going to be a 4-star rating right up until the last chapter, which blew me away. It is a bit gory though.
Carey definitely knows how to craft memorable characters, the ending had me absolutely in tears! I wouldn't want this story to end any other way.
