Good compared to some other books in the genre, but probably my least favorite Dan Brown book.
As with all Dan Brown novels, I was, for the most part, highly entertained. All of his novels seem to have the unlikeliest of coincidences, and Digital Fortress is no different. But cheez whiz, with all of David Becker's lucky coincidences, he should have bought a lottery ticket because he would have certainly won the jackpot! All the coincidences aside, I found this a fun and relaxing read.
Although I felt the basic premise of the story was interesting, overall I did not like this book. The most frustrating part was that on several occasions I thought he was treating his readers like we were weren't very bright. He'd try to build up suspense for things that were painfully obvious. I had two different people tell me how great this book was so I read until the end with the hope that something would make it worthwhile. Sadly, that did not happen.
Typical detective style book, with Dan Browns own imprint. Reminiscent of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series. Good for the detective genre.
Another cliff hanger from Dan Brown. Read it in an afternoon - could not put it down.
This book made me yell more than once. Dan, my dear, crypto doesn't work that way. Really. Not. And I'm very much annoyed, because I still wanted to know what happens, because suspense, you can write. But it wouldn't have been that much harder for your book to be readable by people who have some basic (really, basic) notions of crypto. Very annoying. And all of this to yell the answer to the final enigma 15 pages before the people who are supposed to be living gods actually find it. The book's premise is that NSA can decrypt everything they can intercept, except that some guy claims that he found an unbreakable algorithm. Problem is, the technical elements of the story are so bad that the whole thing breaks down. Kind of a waste, because otherwise it would probably be quite a nice thriller. Grmbl.
Certainly not short on technical detail which had my head spinning for a large chunk of the first 50 pages or so and for me, somewhat unnecessary which led me to think the story was going to be tedious, the story is fast moving and gripping. Very readable, but for me probably better as a movie.
Probably my least favorite book by this author, such a slow burn and the last, like, 50 pages it finally came together.
What can I expect from Dan Brown than a page-turner masterpiece? I admit that I didn't like Origin all that much, but Digital Fortress rocked!
Right from the beginning, the suspense was thick. From David getting shipped all the way to Spain, to the Digital Fortress, the air was thick with suspense.
Though there was no Mr. Micky Mouse...Er, I mean Robert Langdon in this one, Susan Fletcher was a really awesome character too. But I liked David Becker the most. Because he was so out of his comfort zone and yet he managed to succeed at every point, up until escaping from his killer.
I read Digital Fortress in two sittings. The first time, I hadn't been all that interested. But then the second time I just couldn't let go, and I spent almost all day reading it, and finally finished it.
I loved trying to figure out who the culprit might be. Unlike murder mysteries, here, I had to wonder who would want Digital Fortress the most. And when I finally did realize who it was, I was shell-shocked.
Digital Fortress was adventurous, full of suspense and an exciting read! I'd definitely recommend you to read it!
