I not a big believer in spoilers, as a concept. But Lost Souls would be a difficult book to discuss with any kind of detail without ruining some of the fun. I'll try anyway. The "present" sections of the book featuring the TNG/DS9/VOY era characters are better than in the first two books because the characters are finally allowed to catch up with the readers in terms of how the ENT era sections interact with the plot. Which does make sense, I promise. The ENT era stuff remains the main reason to read the series as a whole. It's just really good SF storytelling. Its easy to forgive the faults of the "present" story (specifically that its all treading water for 2 books) because other storyline is so strong.

Destiny has been a great trilogy. Lost Souls is a lot better than the previous book. Maybe it's because there's a lot more action here and it focuses less on the people lost in time. Although the last book did leave with a great cliffhanger of thousands or Borg coming into Klingon, Federation, and Romulan space.
Speaking of which, Lost Souls has to do more with the Borg and their origins than anything else. Now while this might not be canon, it still made for a good story. Part of me wished it was canon. I doubt they'll follow this story as an origin. The origin made a lot of sense and didn't weaken the Borg by any means.
Something I did enjoy was the fact of how each respective world and person dealt with their imminent destruction. I thought that added a lot to the story and made it deeper than it would have been otherwise. Without it, it would have been purely a plot driven book.
The only downside with this book and trilogy, is that what happens to the Borg. I didn't expect that to happen but when you're dealing with a trilogy that has damn near every Borg invade the Alpha Quadrant, there really wasn't any other way they could have gone with it.
I'm more curious to what's going to happen post-this trilogy. There's a lot of things that have to be dealt with because the Alpha Quadrant is pretty much up for grabs.

I though the ideas behind the book were good and the scope was huge, but found the cast of characters a bit daunting at times trying to remember what they all looked like due to the vast number of species. Old age memory probably. I though the conclusion was anti climatical and the US marines in space Fire In the hole attitude not very star trekky. Great idea but for me, let down by too many sections where charcaters just act completely out of character for Federation crew, too many different species, and too many planetary anhilations seemingly just for the sake of it. I didn't understand why the borg send a couple of ships now and again until the Federation have their last minute escape plan in place, then they send their fleet. It just didn't make sense to me. They are ruthless and relentless, and this seemed the equivalent of the baddy telling Jame Bond his entire plan while he holds a gun on Bond, right beifre Bond kills him!

This was a great end to this trilogy and a good re-start for my star trek reading. I don't know how to review this book without spoilers, so be warned. Two things I loved about this book. It was a Star Trek Universe book. Riker and Ezri both played important parts in solving this crisis. Picard actually wasn't the Grand Savior of Starfleet, it was Ezri and Riker who made the crucial decisions and Picard who stood a bit in the way. Second, it was the origin of the Borg. We finally know where they came from, and it was logical and satisfying.
I hope Ezri gets her own series. I'd follow the adventures of the Aventine.
Next up the Typhon Pact.

Loved this trilogy, real page-turners with some great sci-fi concepts. I think it would be entertaining even to a non-Trekkie.

I don’t think I’ve yet read a Star Trek book quite so addicting. Or I guess I should say books, because it’s a series!
Star Trek: Destiny: Lost Souls by David Mack is the third and final book in the Destiny series. And oh my gosh its just as good as the first two. All the events of the previous books come to a climax and resolution in the book, and it’s definitely worth getting through all three books to the end. This series is one that I could read again and again.
Things played out in a way I could see them happening. Mack has a really good understanding about how the characters would think and act.
I have to give this book five stars. It was a great way to top of the series, and I loved the fact that we got to see all the crews we love working together in more than a “here is a fan-service cameo” kind of way.
If you're a Trek fan you definitely need to read this series! I've already gotten four other people hooked on it. :-)
