Brutal, funny, informative. Blades of Freedom covers the Haitian Revolutions, the dawn of Haiti & bits of Napoleonic Wars - with the Louisiana Purchase tossed in at the end as a wrap-up. This is my first of the Hazardous Tales and I'm eager to read more. My only gripe is the teeny tiny font. For accessibility reasons, the publisher should consider a larger book.

Nathan Hale's books are always extremely well done. I'm glad I picked this one up, especially because it's an era of history I don't know much about. In America, we often forget that almost 90% of people in the Atlantic slave trade went to Central and South America. Hearing how slavery impacted history, culture, and religion is crucial to understanding the modern state of the world.

Pretty brutal ... and very violent ... but that’s history for you when it comes to people enslaving others ... and this series is always a dependable and fascinating look at some amazing historic events ...

Exactly what you expected from a volume of the Nathan Hale collection...maybe a smidge unfocused, but I guess so is history. Lots of solid knowledge regarding early Bonaparte as well as the dawn of Haiti.

What a story to read with my 11 year old... Funny, violent, nicely drawn. Great book for young readers interested in history.

My 10 yr. old son had this book delivered the day it was released. He LOVES Nathan Hale's hazardous tales. He's read nearly all of them and kept persisting that I read this newest one so much that I finally gave in. I'm so glad I did! I learned a ton about Haiti - I had no idea about the fascinating history of this island - and of course about the Louisiana Purchase too. Seeing the Hamilton musical has me extra interested in the Revolutionary War, so those Nathan Hale Hazardous Tales are up next!

An excellent middle-grade, graphic nonfiction that explores the intertwining history of the Haitian Revolution, Napoleon, and the Louisiana purchase. While it shows integrity in presenting the realities of the horrors of slavery and the revolution that followed, they are presented in an age-appropriate manner. This is my first book in this series, and I am now eager to explore its other offerings.
