When You Ask Me Where I'm Going by Jasmin Kaur

Five stars for the poetry! Definitely modern poetry that hit hard about a number of relevant topics. The poetry, in spite of its "instagramyness" was deep and layered, and I found myself stopping often to pause, re-read, and ponder.

The story that just sprouts up in the middle could have been expanded more - I would like to know what happened to Kiran, Sahaara, and Sunny.

ok so at first i was like woah this is deep, too deep for me to get in one read (had to hurry bc of library deadlines) in a way that was actually kinda annoying cuz it felt like i had to unlock the meaning rather than dig deeper, but i think that may have been more a reflection of my impatience. there were lots of really good lines and stuff throughout the book. when it got to the chapter with different characters i was really enthralled, and i've never seen anyone do that type of ongoing story in a poetry book before so that was funky fresh and cool!

I liked this, but something about it was just off to me. I definitely breezed right through and I enjoyed myself, but nothing really touched me or blew me away. Also, the random story in the middle was so odd to me, maybe I missed the message, but it threw me off so that the next few verses just didn’t sink into my brain right.

I want language so thick
it will drown me with it.»

This was a lovely read of poems and I saved a few in my common place book. While I couldn't connect to the specific circumstances since it was different to my own life, I really enjoyed how the poems make you get a touch of the experience of POC, immigrants, refugees, and women lives. A lot of gems in this collection and would definitely pick up more of this author's work.
