I was going to give this book 4 stars, because there were some contributions that I felt didn’t add anything, or that I didn’t enjoy/understand, but then I heeded the advice in the book and realised that even its existence is worthy of 5 stars. Indeed, many more, if I could award them. We need more writing on feminism, especially as accessible, readable, welcoming, and inclusive as this collection.
some of these were downright horrible
but like feminism slay!!

Go, stop reading this boring review and read the books now.
Serious, just go.
You finished it? Awesome.
Now onto the review.
Absolute might read/listen. I love the people reading their essays on the audiobook and will be buying my physical copy right now so I can give it to everyone I know to read.
Ok, now go back and read your favourite parts (or maybe the whole book) again. It’s really not that long and it deserves repeat reading.

The beginning was a mix of 1 star, 3 star and 5 star essays. Some of them were just speaking facts, some were just blabbering for the sake of saying something about feminism, some were entertaining personal stories but there wasn’t much purpose, and some were genuinely insightful and interesting.
The last few sections (ie. poetry, action and education) were quite captivating and I learnt many things such as the suffragettes and feminism in Japan, and the end made me feel empowered - especially the story about the original publishing of this book.

A very energising and thought-provoking read. The range of experience on display and the variety of viewpoints was a perfect mix, shining light on people with very similar backgrounds to me, and people with perspectives so far removed from my own narrow world view that it has made me curious and keen to learn more about some of my particular blindspots.
I'm about to have my first baby (any day now, gulp) and some of the essays hit me harder because of this impending life change. Keira Knightley's essay in particular was a beautiful and frank depiction of how motherhood changed her. Whether I have a son or a daughter, I'm keen to encourage my child to read and engage with different world views and to effect change for the better, wherever possible. This book is a great starting point, full of inspiration and ideas.

July book club book:
A nice mixture of essays, all roughly the same length which made it easy to read. Really enjoyed the poetry.

A summary of my favourite quotes:
'I believe in giving girls a chance to activate their potential without fear'
'I see feminism as power and strength'
'We can't be what we can't see'
'Be an ally for both genders by advocating accountability and a level playing field'
'If you want to go fast go alone, If you want to go far go together'

Spoiler alert: a great introduction, if a little repetitive sometimes.
