This book was stylistically interesting but was hard to get into. I had a hard time following the plot and enjoying the characters because it felt like stream of consciousness. The ending didn't make much sense to me and I don't really know what happened.

I found the language in this book difficult to begin with. It didn’t enhance the story but obscured it. Maybe that was the purpose, but I found it irritating. Eventually I did sink into the story and it is an amazing story. A story of an outcast, an outsider all his life and the decisions he makes about what is important.

Just not into it

I'm depressed now. :(

Man and dog. So, you know you're in for heartbreak, but this book serves up the human sadness more than the canine variety. Such damage done to children by life, circumstances and isolation, not to mention by those who should love them.

The language was gorgeous; now that I know the author is Irish, this book begs to be read aloud or listened to. But though the prose was lush and the story (such as it is) is compelling, I never felt compelled to pick up this book; I never needed it like I need many books I'm reading. Not sure why. But it left me unsatisfied. Melancholy but unsatisfied. Maybe it will stay with me longer than I think. We shall see.

Worth reading for the extraordinary observations of the natural world alone, but the intimate portrait of our narrator, living his boxed in and fearful life so intensely, is what really turns the pages gold. Sad though. Oh my. So sad. With few moments of relief.

I loved this book. This author can write I can't believe this was a debut novel. The descriptions in this book were beautiful her turn of phrase was stunning. This is written in the first person and you feel that you are inside the head of the narrator while his talking to one eye his dog companion who is also on the edge of society. The tale of friendship and loneliness between them and how this makes you realise that none of us knows what is going on in people lives how we shouldn't judge and maybe just a smile might make someone's day. This is a touching book and I highly recommend it
