The writing is lovely in this sad story. A year of isolation with my cat gave this novel some added perspective for me.

Not a book to read if you need a pick-me-up. A rather sad tale but with the most beautiful descriptive language I've ever read. The story, though depressing, is relatable if you've ever felt you don't belong somewhere or that you have but one friend in the world who maybe, just maybe, understands you because he/she/it, too, doesn't relate to others like it.

Terrific. Really looking forward to reading her next novel.

This is not a book for everyone. It is a (mostly) quiet story about the newly-formed relationship between a reclusive man and a misfit dog in a coastal town in Ireland. As the man confides in the dog, telling him every little thing about his unremarkable days (present) and difficult days (past) the real story slowly reveals itself, with a seriously disturbing unveiling three quarters of the way through. Beautifully, poetically, honestly written, I enjoyed finding little bits of light in so much grey. Depressing, for sure- but not all books should be joyful.

There was no real plot and the dog needed training not taking on a roadtrip.

Gorgeous. The textbook definition of quietly devastating.

loved it in spite of the extreme anxiety i felt while reading it. can i really be blamed, though, when the story is about a rescued, one-eyed dog, who's black, whose pet-parent is unabashedly devoted to him when this could easily be about MY rescued, one-eyed (same eye, too) black dog? the anxiety stemmed from me reading reviews about how this was not a happy story, many reviewers used the terms "tears," "sobbing," "sad" etc i was worried for "oneeye" and his fate the entire time i read...so much so that i'm now going to re-read it now that i know what happens. while the story is grim, twisted and at times heart-wrenching the writing is absolutely beautiful. i can't remember a book where i was so emotionally invested in characters, sara baume absolutely captured "devotion."
