This is the first book I picked up after a couple years of not reading. It was everything I need in a book to get me wanting to read again.
It had some humor, sad moments, scary moments.
All in all this book was a page turner!
It’s needs to be made into a tv series it would be so good!

The Old Village in the 1990s is the type of neighborhood where you leave your front door unlocked. Patricia spends her days cleaning the house, looking after her children, and choosing her battles with her husband. Her escape is book club, where she gathers with the other housewives to read true crime and horror novels. So when their new neighbor James Harris moves in and children start to disappear, Patty can read between the lines. She's convinced he's a serial killer - until she sees him and realizes he's somehow even worse.

A smart horror novel, where the real horror isn't necessarily the vampire but the ways women are gaslighted and abused by men, even the men who are supposed to be closest to them. This is classified as a horror novel, but I didn't find it that scary! Has one of the best Author's Notes.

for a skeptic of the horror/thriller genre, this was decent. it captured the tension and the eerie, sinister atmosphere. however, the pacing left something to be desired. it felt like long stretches of filler interspersed with extreme heights of action, and even then not the most climactic of scenes. i really felt that loss of momentum in the middle section.

the characters were interesting as a group, but some of them pissed me off a little too much to be rooting for them in the end. i would recommend this for the same kind of people who would join a true crime book club.

the book had a lot of potential for sure, but i don’t think it delved deep enough into some of the themes as i felt it could have to really make it stand out for me personally.
