This was good!
I do have to point out that the end felt a bit rushed and abrupt, but other than that it was a lovely read!

ive been hearing a lot of complaints about this being too smutty and as someone who can be easily turned off by such things it..didn't really feel that way? its kinda hard to label a romance book as too smutty when they main couple's whole relationship started out based on sex. and while that may have been how they entered each other's orbit, it's not the only thing that matters in their dynamic and their love story doesn't really revolve around it. the emotional aspect of lukas and scarlet's romance is all about trust. them learning to trust both themselves and each other. a leap of faith, if you will. (slight pun intended?? on vandy's behalf?? is that how this works? anyway) they simply spent a lot of time expressing that through sex. healthily explored, enthusiastically consensual, passionate and at some point even a little bit tearjerking (to me at least) kind of sex. well placed and not at all unnecessary, tastefully written sex. so again i really dont see the issue. this book still checked a lot of the boxes needed to be filled for the recipe to a good romance. excellent chemistry, tension and banter? check. relatable fmc, smoking hot and incredibly, pathetically, embarrassingly down bad mmc? check. also, there's NO third act break up (always love that), and there's a good conflict before the climax without those cartoonishly evil antagonists who wanna ruin everything for the sake of the drama™️, but instead a lengthy, mature explanation and apology from someone who made a mistake (penelope girl you pissed me OFF but im glad you got your shit together.)

i mean, after all that, what's not to love? this is the third ali hazelwood book ive read and since i had as much fun as i did with the previous two, i think it's safe to consider myself a fan.

and once again, shoutout to main characters going to therapy and actually benefiting from it!! second time in a row ive read about that lately. maybe this is a sign that i should go back. we'll unpack that later. anyways, 5 big fat stars. i really, really, REALLY enjoyed this one.

I would have preferred more science content but I understand that Diving and Swimming were the main focus. I thought the characters were fine but the FMC did feel like a bit of a combination of the FMC's from her previous books. I was happy that the 'antagonist' was not some evil mastermind but I still found the third act a bit eye roll worthing from all the miscommunication. Be aware that they basically spend the entire book in a situationship while the entire school thinks he is dating her best friend (yikes). Overall it was fine but this was not my favourite Ali book.

I have a love/hate relationship with Ali Hazelwood’s books. Her writing style is funny and easy to binge, but I find myself wishing she could dig a little deeper into the situations her characters find themselves in.

I found myself relating to this FMC more than her others. The banter in this book is A+, and the secret relationship trope is one of my favorites. My biggest con would be the lack of information/general education that should be included when a D/s dynamic is present.

I really enjoyed this latest Ali Hazelwood book so much, and the narration was EXCELLENT! Definitely check warnings for Shmexy stuff though. I do wish that the excerpt on the back of the book didn’t use “ace swimmer” as a descriptor because I thought Lukas was going to be asexual (especially since many of Hazelwood’s other books involve ace characters), but it just meant star swimmer or their best swimmer. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this book! The characters were funny and relatable, the spice was good, and HEA guaranteed!
(Would have been quicker if our girl Scarlet admitted her feelings, but she had some shit to work through lol).
