Ali Hazelwood strikes gold again. While I always enjoy her books, I love that she branched out into another area: college athletics. As a non-athlete it was a new world for me. Anytime I read her books I learn something. Insight into a world I didn’t know, facts about places or cultures, and (this time) a spicier theme. Her books truly immerse me.

I love Ali Hazelwoods books, I love her writing, I love the nerdy characters, I love the spice, I have not been disappointed. In deep dive I learned more about diving then I ever thought I would know.

Little Dark but has a happy ending. Discussions of trauma, severe injury, abuse, and s*xual power exchange.

Deep End is a relatively quick paced romance with the majority of the story occurring over the course of a single university school year. The hard and fast connection between Lukas and Scarlett is exciting as they explore and give into their desires for each other. This dynamic between Scarlett and Lukas made this a fun read for me.

The story doesn't only focus on the relationship between Lukas and Scarlett, but with their relationships with their friends and family, and their relationships with themselves. Their relationships with their families in particular allow readers to get an understanding as to how the pair have gotten to be who/where they are at this point in their lives which I found made the story even more enjoyable. To be able to see the dynamics between all the different characters and how they impact each other's past, present, and futures made for me an even more compelling read.

For those who like romances novels that don't solely focus on the romance aspect this one is for you. You get to explore the characters not only as a couple but as individuals with lives that exist outside of each other.
That said this novel does include some s*xual content, with a power exchange kink at that, so for those of you who like s*xually charged novels with a bit of kink, I definitely think you'd like this one. If you prefer to stay away from these type of stories, then this may not be fore you. For me, I know Deep End is one that I would probably reread in the future as long as I was in the mood for this type of story.

This book was a bit complicated for me. There were moments I really connected with it, especially Scarlett. She felt so real: anxious around men, super introverted, constantly roasting herself (literally too relatable). Even though she’s way more put-together than me, I still saw a lot of myself in her. I also really loved was how open the book was about kinks and sexual wants. It didn’t feel performative, just normal?

But the pacing dragged. It wasn’t the kind of book that immediately pulls you in, and I struggled to stay invested. The romance, especially between Scarlett and Lukas honestly felt flat. Their chemistry was off in my opinion, and their relationship didn’t build in a way that made me feel anything exceptionally strong for them. I felt like there was also a lot of telling instead of showing. And Lukas… sir, can you please speak plainly?? Not everything needs to be in secret code 💀

Overall I think it had potential, and some parts resonated with me, but it didn’t fully deliver.
