Oof.
I couldn’t connect with a single character. There was minimal meaningful individual development, and honestly, I didn’t love—or even like—anyone.
We’re supposed to believe Lukas is a god with otherworldly, supernatural lover skills that defy basic female biology? Come on. For a female author writing primarily for women, this just didn’t land.
The ‘publicly dating someone else for appearances while secretly involved with the other main character’ trope didn’t work. No one in the story seemed to genuinely care about maintaining the image, making the entire setup feel pointless.
Yes, the “spice” is frequent, but it’s not particularly detailed or kinky, despite being marketed as if it would be. The power play could have worked, but without emotional connection to the characters, it just fell flat.
I’m not even sure there was a main plot? Just a jumble of side plots that never really went anywhere. Scarlett is whiny, Pen is a toxic, bad friend, and so many elements felt underdeveloped. For example, the “I’m so afraid of men” thread gets a two-second backstory, pops up repeatedly, and then magically disappears.
Everything about this book was forgettable. Not Ali Hazelwood’s best work.

That was excellent.
I’m typically not an Ali Hazelwood fan - I’ve read at least 3 and I didn’t like any of them - but this is so good. I loved the main characters vs other books I couldn’t stand how quirky and cute the FMC was written and how cold the MMC always was. I really adored Lukas and Scarlett.
There were a few triggering places (her dad, their BDSM list) where I had no idea what would happen, but it was a false alarm. I don’t love BDSM but this was well written.
There was soooo much tension between all of the characters and I’m so glad it was fixed by the end andPen apologized . I would have loved to read just one more sex scene.

Graphic: Sexual content, Toxic friendship
Moderate: Mental illness, Outing, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Child abuse, Domestic abuse, Death of parent
The dad only raised his voice and called her names. Not sexual abuse although the author kind of alludes to it…
