This one’s been everywhere, so I finally picked it up to see what the fuss was about. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a modern psychological thriller: short chapters, a simple but intriguing setup (a woman kills her husband and then refuses to speak another word), and plenty of tension to keep you flicking pages.
I tore through it quickly, which is always a good sign. Michaelides knows how to hook you, and I’ll admit I didn’t see the twist coming until it hit. That said, once the reveal landed, I found myself thinking less “wow, brilliant” and more “oh, clever trick.” It’s a good twist, but the rest of the novel felt a little thin once I’d closed the book.
I also wanted a bit more depth to Alicia as a character. Her silence is obviously the point, but I never felt fully connected to her story beyond the intrigue. And the therapist-narrator… well, let’s just say he tested my patience at times.
Enjoyable? Yes. Memorable? Not especially. But if you want a fast-paced thriller for a weekend read, it does exactly what it says on the tin.
