I'm kicking off 2024 with Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold, a novella that unravels the final hours of Santiago's life until his inevitable death. The story is narrated through interviews, memories, and court documents, not as a whodunnit, but rather a how.

Marquez skillfully explores various themes, with my fascination centering on the bystander effect within the community. The surreal awareness of Santiago's tragedy raises poignant questions about complicity in the face of impending disaster. Likewise, it's a compelling delve into societal and cultural absurdities. Note: Check trigger/content warnings before picking up the book. This marks my initial dive into Marquez's works, and I'm eager to explore more of his writings throughout the year.

This book was difficult to get through the first time around because I had to read it for school and had to annotate. After I had read it the second time, however, I found it was a really good story. Although most crime books actually have something to solve, this story was just recounting a story of a man's murder from several different points of view.

Book 8/80 of 2023

A classic I had never read before. What happens in the book is already pretty much summed up in the plot, but the narration and the reflections brought by this are the best part.
I liked this more than "Memorias de mis putas triste" and I look forward to reading more from G.G.M.

Listened to as an audiobook.

A great introduction to Marquez. A meditation on the nature of morality, left me questioning the place 'honor' has in societies, although the story takes place in 1950's Colombia, the overarching theme can be applied to many social groups.
