this has been a book i have anticipated reading for so long, mostly because it sounded so up my alley. while i don’t think it can make it into my all time favourites, i loved the time spent in this world, with these characters and their love. i made sure to savour it. when reading, it felt completely like watching a movie in my head and you know a book must be special to do that. i’m left reeling by that ending, quite emotional. it did underwhelm me only by a little, but only because i was expecting this to be a five star book. pick this up immediately!!

I started this book bc I saw everyone talk about it and my friends also told me that it was good, the summary was interesting, so I thought why not?
I would like to preface this by saying that this review is my own opinion and that you can disagree.
Let's start with what I liked in this book:
— First the writing was superb, Rebecca Ross is definitely a talented writer, and you can it in the way she wrote Iris and Roman letters. You could feel the emotions emanating from the letters.
— I also really liked the myth of Enva and Dacre, which is, I guess, inspired from Orpheus and Eurydice. The story about Enva calling the soldiers with her music is a fascinating concept. I wish we could've learned more, but I guess she's keeping the rest for the second book.
Now, what I didn't really like about the book:
— The characters: I'm not saying that I didn't like Iris and Roman and all the others, not at all. I just had a really hard time connecting to any of them. For example, when Iris's mother died, I was sad bc losing your mother is obviously sad, and I felt sad for her, but I didn't really care that much. Like I could read that she was hurt and feeling empty, but I don't know, it didn't felt like such a big deal to me. Even if it was.
— The war: When I went into this book, I thought that we would see much more things about the war, but I felt that this aspect was quite lacking, we only got some scenes and they felt quite short. During the first part (which was very long and a little boring, but more on that later), everyone was making a big deal out of this war. So, I wanted to see more of it, and understand why it was so horrible, not just bc it's a war but also bc the gods are the ones directly calling the soldiers to fight for them.
— The part one: Part one of the book was long and made me want to dnf the book. I don't have any problem with an author taking their time to introduce the world and the characters. These kinds of things are the most important in a story, so of course you want to take your time with it. The issue is, since part one was kind of boring, it made part two and part three look like they were going by so fast, and it felt like a huge contrast. Personally, I felt like part one was longer than part two or part three when they have the same amount of pages.
— The plot twist: Now, I don't know if the brother first brother reveal and the fact that he was fighting for Dacre were supposed to be a plot twist. But personally, I saw the Dacre thing coming from a mile away, so the confession was kind of underwhelming.
— The end: I felt like the end was quite lacking. The brother-sister reunion felt really underwhelming, and it felt like the author was trying too hard to write an end where you NEED to read the second book. I don't know how to explain, but the cliffhangers were obvious and just felt like the author was “overdoing it” so that you read the second book.
All in all, I gave this book three stars bc anything under feels like too low bc it was still an enjoyable read, even some things were lacking. I hope that in the second book we see more of the war aspect, and we learn more about the myths and the different gods and the history of this world.

Rebecca Ross’s writing is so beautiful. It plunges you into this story and guides you through the turmoil of these characters. Roman and Iris’s story is so tender and compelling. I loved getting to know both of them through their letters. The war setting of this book made everything heightened, the emotion and the intensity. Very excited to read the second and find out how their story ends! Also very excited to find out a bit more about the gods and how they fit in this world.
