Okay well if you are hoping for a fairytale HEA with the two setup love interests together, this is not going to be it. The fairytale like nature of the story had me curious how this would end. Irrylath is as usual rather cold and indifferent to Aeriel for the most part and even flirts and entertains advances from another love interest which is even more infuriating than the last book. At this point my own self was torn between any love or hope of some romance with him for Aeriel. Erin describes him best at one point as undeserving.

The end is a bit sad imo. It doesn't quite feel like a win when Aerial's reward for her long and perilous journey is to now give up her desires to continue as savior to the world. The only saving grace being Erin gets to be her constant companion. Which as I think about it really maybe if this weren't written in the 80s feels like the best part. It feels like a happy lesbian ending without author implying as much, but that will be my fanon on how it ends as a happy ending here because let us face it Erin was always more devoted and loving of Aeriel than Irrylath ever was. So yes if you like that, or think about it from that take, then this is an HEA.

First of all, the way this book began was kind of confusing, though it was different and original way to start the story. Most stories follow a linear path, but the beginning of this book differs from that convention, and to have been dumped into this third volume with no idea of what was going on made us all the more sympathetic to Aeriel because, well, she was as lost as we were.

I wish we could have had more interaction between her and the people she crossed paths with, including her brother, but I guess that wasn't her fate. In fact, the ending was so painful and sad. It's true what others have said. To go so far, to do so much, and get nothing that she wanted in the end. To be forced into a fate she didn't ask, a thankless task that will keep her from the man she loved and the people she befriended, the family she found. But not all books have happy endings, and the author wrote an incredibly original and beautiful trilogy that I'm quite glad I read.

I loved this series and devoured it, but can only give the final book four stars because of the ending. I reverted to a four-year-old. Stamped my feet and shouted "BUT THAT'S JUST NOT FAIR!!!" As another reviewer states, Aeriel just swaps one form of servitude for another.

Yeah, I know: life isn't. But I was all set for a fluffy bunny ending, and didn't get it. I'd still recommend it in a heartbeat, and will read it again at some point. And probably scream "BUT THAT'S JUST NOT FAIR!!!" when I get to the end again.

Absolutely beautiful - better than I ever thought it could be. I loved the first two books, but this strikes me as so much more of an achievement; I felt like I was reading it on several levels at once without any effort. More fable and history than sci-fi (despite being set on the moon in a distant future), which is credit to Pierce's wonderful sense of language and myth.
