I really, REALLY liked most of this book. The author made a stylistic choice/plot twisty choice that took a lot of wind out of my sails.

Overall, I liked this book but the pacing and timeline really threw me off. A simple before and after would have been better but all the "one year before the before" stuff was confusing, especially when we find out
that Monday had been dead for two years and Claudia's trauma prevented her from remembering.

This book wasn’t perfect, but I still really enjoyed it. The way it is written, the timeline can get a bit confusing and is difficult to keep track of. The big twist and reveal at the end wasn’t as shocking or hard hitting as it was probably meant to be. The way it is all laid out, it is easy to know what really happened way before it is revealed. It was also lacking all of the suspense that would have made it the mystery/thriller it was kind of trying to be. I really liked the author’s writing, especially the small sections periodically spread throughout the book assigning colors to each character. I loved the way she gave specific traits to each character, it made them feel very real.

Spoilers:
What I really didn’t understand was the need to make Claudia have memory problems and it had all happened two years ago. This book would have been equally as good had it been happening in the present like it had seemed like it was for the whole book. Having her have episodes where she forgets what happened added nothing, and was unnecessary. In my opinion the story would have been at least equally as good if not better had that part been left out.

I don't have adequate words for how tragic this story is.

I’m not sure this is really a mystery/thriller but I suppose it fits closest to that. It’s more of a social comedy of race, class issues and abusive parents. Monday goes missing and no one aside from her friend Claudia cares. Everyone else just shrugs it off. It’s really sad to read about that, but with who Monday is it does make sense unfortunately. I think it’s realistic that Claudia doesn’t become a teenage detective but instead keeps asking.
