Nancy Drew arrives in Phoenix, Arizona, eagerly looking forward to a fun-filled vacation in Shadow Ranch, but abrubtly finds herself involved in a baffling mystery. The ranch is being haunted by a phantom horse and maliciously damaged by an unknown enemy. Local peopel believe that the ghostly animal is carrying out the curse of Dirk Valentine, the romantic outlaw who was killed many years ago at Shadow Ranch, where he had gone to fufill a promise to his sweetheart.

Thank the book gods for Little Free Libraries, whereupon I found this little treasure. I grew up loving Nancy Drew in every capacity. I would get these original mysteries after long walks to the library with my mother. I'd sit next to my older sister absolutely entranced by the video game adaptations, until eventually I was old enough to play them myself.

This particular edition of Nancy's mysteries finds her and her best friends, Bess and George, in a beautifully atmospheric ranch. Shadow Ranch is no place for young girls, what with all of the sabotage, missing artifacts, and that malevolent horse specter appearing right before disaster. Luckily, Miss Nancy Drew is on the case! Will the young sleuth crack the many mysteries surrounding Shadow Ranch, or will the specter horse next signal her own disappearance?

While I enjoyed this Nancy Drew story, it was less tense and exciting than the previous ones. The mystery seemed more flat to me.

I originally bought the first 5 books in this series for my niece for when she's old enough to read them (she's turning 5 in August 2021). However, since she already has too many books to read at home, I decided to add these books to my new library, although I have yet to create it at this point. I can still buy the books for it and therefore I am.

There have only been 2 books in this series so far that I gave 5 stars to, and this is not one of them, sadly. I was not interested in this one as much as the others. Hoping to be interested in many others because I plan to read as many books in this series as I can find and buy. I have the first 30 so far.

To be honest, this story was not the best. I don't know what it is about this particular story but I wasn't into it as much as others. I liked it, but it was just not as good as others. This one was also rewritten. I have not read the original version but I'm assuming it was better than this one.

Whatever I think of this, I still highly recommend it. You should buy it. You should read it. You should gift it to any child you know. Many kids will enjoy this series.

Have fun with this and all other books in this series. :)

slow-paced

I found this dull compared to other children's mysteries I have read. I felt like it was a slow pace and didn't really peak, until the last couple chapters. This might have been due to this being the 5th book in the series rather than the first, so the character weren't described the same as if it were the first book.
