I think it is a great book, written brilliantly :). However the ending, I believe, is slightly rushed.
slow-paced

Couldn’t get into it. It’s not written bad at all I just wasn’t in the headspace either to get into the vibe of the book.
challenging dark emotional mysterious reflective tense fast-paced

There’s something interesting about a town gaslighting itself as a whole. Sometimes the brain will compartmentalize to save itself from trauma and that what Samhatton did. Something truly horrible and sick happened and the couldn’t accept that so they locked it away and created generational trauma. Bad things we lock away come back sometimes and that’s what happens in this book. They tried to lock Daphne away but she’s never truly gone. The town puts a bandaid on a gaping wound.

Okay, so spoilers follow. Thoughts:
-The whole
the outcast is outcast for a reason and she's actually evil and that's why she was killed thing sucks.
Not an uncommon trope in horror at this point but one I generally find pretty boring. Always feels like people saying
"Ha! I was right to bully that weirdo in high school, he turned out to be an ax murderer!" Which is just, like, fuck you, yknow?
Anyways that part sucks. HOWEVER!
-This book deals with anxiety so so well that it redeems most of the things I dislike, honestly. This is totally what it feels like, especially when your life IS actually going to shit, to be anxious about your life going to shit.
-Teen girl writing in her journal voices in fiction are pretty much always stilted and theres no exception to that here, those parts are awkward but not the worst
-Reminds me of
Misery in terms of the big scary woman is evil thing, which again sucks, but there's way less of the stuff about how ugly she is that I generally find detracts from Stephen King's writing about evil women, so there's that.
A better done version of that trope, but I fundamentally still dislike it.
-Also reminds me strongly of a book I read by (around 12? 13?) years ago called Bliss, apparently by Lauren Myracle
-Generally was gripping & had plenty of good terror & some graphic gore

For me, I found long sections of this quite boring. The only information or detail you knew about the characters was basketball and that consumed the whole book. There were several deaths but nothing horrific or scary for me personally. I was just very excited about reading this and it fell flat. Also, abit confusing in parts jumping between characters... And as mentioned above, the characters were quite boring and one dimensional so it was hard to remember who was who and what relevance they had. Ending also was anticlimactic.......... Why did I give this two stars?????! I like the anxiety thing.

Daphne is about basketball, thoughts, anxiety, and a ghost story.

Kit and her friends are having a sleepover before their big basketball game where one of them tells a ghost story about Daphne who may have been murdered. The story can't be real...can it?

Daphne is a really interesting book as it deals a lot with anxiety. Anyone with anxiety should be able to relate to Kit. You also don't need to like basketball to enjoy this one. It's a part of the story, but more a side part. Daphne herself is a great villain and creates a scary image. The book is violent, but not really graphic more describing the after effects of the kills and not in great detail. I liked this one a lot.

If you've dealt with anxiety and been scared by a ghost story told late at night, you'll probably like this one.

This was a really interesting take on the slasher sub genre of horror.

Let me start with what I enjoyed about this book.

3 ⭐️

I always enjoy Malerman's writing and this one definitely had some weird/creepy scenes which I enjoyed. I don't really care for sports - basketball included but it was a fun read.
