loved it!
Absolutely loved this. I love everything this man has written thus far. I thought it would be difficult to get into because I’m just not a big basketball fan, but man does it pull you in! The anxiety piece was so real and true. It resonates. And, something I’ve never said about a book before, the Acknowledgement section was really lovely to read. Thanks for another amazing and terrifying story, Josh Malerman.

daphne is terrifying!!! i got the creepy, heart pumping paranoid feeling reading parts of this.
because this is a story about anxiety, there’s a lot of repetition, ruminating thoughts etc which felt very young to me. i don’t think this is YA but it reads that way, for sure

Thank goodness for page turners! It's Clown in a Cornfield vibes in that it doesn't do much to step outside the genre box, but it works.
The strongest aspects of this book/why I enjoyed in a numbered list:
1. Really strong scare scenes (the candy store and car scenes come to mind)
2. Fast pace after we meet Daphne for the first time
3. I appreciate the ambiguity in the ending (I think I would have liked *some* more detail, but I prefer ambiguity in supernatural stories over over-explanation)
4. The power of friendship/coming-of-age <3
Also, this may just be a "me thing," but I'm begging on my hands and knees to stop making villains a metaphor for mental illness/trauma. It's effective, particularly for Daphne, but I'm just getting really tired of seeing it in most horror media nowadays.

A quick, propulsive, and imperfect read. I really enjoyed it. He ratchets up the tension on a way that is masterful.

Daphne by Josh Malerman is officially one of my favorite books of 2022 and Josh Malerman is officially an auto-buy author for me! Fantastically frightening and well-paced, the story of Daphne will have you looking over your shoulder. I loved the storytelling, the sequencing, and the imagery! So glad I started the Fall with a win. This is easily 5 stars!
