Really liked this one!! I also have anxiety and was spooked by the same type of urban legends as a teenager so I found it realatable even despite all the basketball talk lol
Woof. Read like a poor man’s confused take on “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
Also, you do not need to state the name of the town every third sentence. That god old real fast.
Finally, shooting free throws to kill an entity? Hard pass. Meh all around.

Daphne is the type of book that keeps you at the edge of your seat the whole way... when you think you have it all figured out, things are not what they seem. There were times where I had to go back and read what just happened slowly because I couldn't believe it. This is a book for fans of a chilling story.

Imagine living in a town with the Boogeyman (or Boogeywoman, as it were). She's there, lingering around the fringes of everyone's mind. In order to summon her, all you need to do is think of her. It's that easy. But once you start thinking, you can't stop. And not unlike Santa, she sees you when you're sleeping, and she knows when you are thinking of her...
Kit and her basketball friends are at a sleepover when they are told the story of Daphne by a teammate. Daphne, the local legend, was supposed to be nearly 7 foot tall, an outcast that loved heavy metal music. And as many outcasts do in literature and movies, she met a horrible end at the hand of some mean classmates. Ever since, she has been haunting the people of her town that deign to even THINK about her, which is rather scary. Have you ever tried not thinking about something? You always end back thinking about it. ALWAYS.
Great unique take on the Boogey(wo)man tale. Loved it.
Kit, who suffers with anxiety and panic attacks, is having an especially hard time not thinking about Daphne. Then her teammates begin dying, one by one. And not normal dying - it's as if a very large person is crushing them to death...
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Having been a high school basketball that participated in many a team sleepover, I had an easy time imagining

Daphne is the unspoken bogeyman of Samhattan, Michigan in Josh Malerman’s latest supernatural thriller. In a nod to the classic YA horror novels of the 80s and 90s, Malerman’s Daphne evokes the blood curdling, bone chilling keep your lights on feelings reminiscent of R. L. Stine and Christopher Pike.
Every town has a legend or hidden history that the locals keep quiet about. That one story that everyone seems to know, but remains behind locked lips. In Samhattan, that story is Daphne - a woman so evil, her name has been stricken from memory until a basketball team’s slumber party awakens her spirit and thoughts of her start to spread throughout the community, resulting in a rising body count.
Daphne is a near perfect supernatural ghost story that is full of blood, evil, and a surprising hero that is crippled with anxiety. The only reason I did not give it five stars is that I am not a huge sports fan and therefore could not relate or care about a lot of the basketball references, but that is not a reflection in the author, as despite my lack if interest in the setting, the story itself kept me captivated.
Thank you to NetGalley, Del Rey, and Josh Malerman for an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.
