Thanks so much to netgalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!!

So I’ve never had the chance to read any of Josh Malerman’s stories. I was super interested in this seeing that a new one of his was coming out so I was excited.

I just don’t think this book was for me. It was a very simple “don’t say it don’t think it” ghost story about a team of girls basketball players who accidentally summon the spirit of a ghost out to kill anyone who thinks about her.

I had a few questions throughout because some of it didn’t make a lot of sense to me. I appreciated the talk about anxiety and how you can identify with it while not making your mental illness all of who you are. Also, I liked the part about how talking about things you shouldn’t can make you brave and you should stand up for yourself. Those were all great points. The twists and turns throughout the book kept it interesting enough. It just dragged on a little for me at some points.

Classic 80s-horror vibes in a "fun-scary" way, with urban legends told by superstitious small-town high school basketball girls at a sleepover bringing a long-buried local danger to life. Also has an interesting tie-in with the theme of anxiety, OCD, intrusive thoughts, and magical thinking. I would have classified this one as a YA and I was a little frustrated that the ending didn't really give me all the answers I wanted, but it was still a great read for spooky season.

Daphne is not anywhere near my normal genre of choice. But seeing that I have loved everything of his that I've read so far I figured I'd give it a shot. It was so good, definitely just in time for the spooky season. Kit was such a great character. She was very thoughtfully developed and you really felt that you got to know her very well.
Daphne of course was extremely creepy and definitely had me on the edge. Highly recommend for horror fans.

I wanted to love it, but the basketball references got exhausting. At least in Samhattan, ball is not life.
