A Room of One's Own

Virginia Woolf

I'm having to DNF this.
Usually I don't mind the somewhat long and descriptive writing that comes with older literature but this is a little much. I can't concentrate on a single point of Woolf's.
I'm sure the essay has incredible interesting points to make and significant value for the early feminist movement but it's just too much for me right now.

¡Pues nada mal!

Incredible to read this way too late in my life. I realise having looked up some writing about this book that she was probably gathering feminist ideas together that were already being discussed. However it's incredible to see just how much these ideas have shaped feminist discourse over the years. I loved the style and the humor and the sharp wit.

Impossible to read without a pen in hand — and, of course, 500 a year and a room of one’s own.

Ah yes, this is why I love reading.

An essential feminist read to be sure. I don’t know if I entirely agree with her main thesis that in order to write women need comfortable money and a room of privacy, she makes stellar points that are unbelievably applicable today. Definitely worth the read and good for discussion!

While certainly a little dated in some of its comments and views, it is an interesting examination of the importance of education and access to adequate financial resources has on what people can achieve in this case with specific reference to women and what has held them back from involvement in the world and literature historically. Without a good education and the comfort that the bills can be paid no one can reach their full potential.
