The forewords are definitely a good addition to these essays from Woolf.

The best example for placing everything you read in the time and context it was written in, because damn, this Virginia, would not do right now

Okay this book is amazing and all that, because of course it is, i mean it’s Virginia Woolf, but why did no one tell me just how absolutely devastating her wit is? It is probably the most beautiful stream of consciousness writing i have ever read and a disturbingly relevant discussion of women in fiction, yes, but no one told me it was also going to be funny? I don’t have a lot of experience with Classics, and all of those that i have read have been Old White Men who take themselves Very Seriously, so i was expecting profound (which it was), but not really expecting to actually, y’know, enjoy reading it? maybe even smile? or laugh out loud? or draw a lil heart next to a line i particularly liked? which is exactly what happened reading this one. needless to say, i was pleasantly surprised.
