An inspector Montalbano book. I really liked this book - it closes a loop in Montalbano and Livia's life and I found it quite sad, but as usual there were quite a lot of light parts too. The characterisation of life in Vigata / Italy/ the police is brilliant, as ever.

livia deserves better.

Montalbano might be in a new relationship as he continues to do more soul searching on his life and long distance relationship with Livia. This plays out in the background while he investigates a possible arms smuggling ring involving Tunisian dissidents and the assault of a beautiful young woman who is married to a much older man. Things are never what they seem as Montalbano well knows but you, the reader, are in for a double surprise when you reach the end. One of my all time favorite series I am just enchanted by this character and his passion, compassion, and zest for life.

I used to really like this series set in Sicily with the focus on food and interesting people. Then it seemed to get stuck on a theme of impossibly beautiful women throwing themselves at the detective, him arguing with his long distance girlfriend and bit of background slapstick. It really became a background audiobook listening device for me while I was doing other things. This one was heading in that direction too, but took a strange more serious turn towards the end which made things a lot more interesting. Hoping the series continues a bit more like that.
