This was one of the less appealing books in the series to me. Despite it featuring a very nice „back to the roots“ school setting, it somehow doesnt have the same charme and moments as the earlier school setting entries. Maybe its because the early iterations of „Diary of a wimpy kid“ consistently switched themes and juggled home/vacation/holiday and school theme into each of the entries and dont keep any of them exclusively to one entry…
I figured I would revisit this series that I was obsessed with in middle school .Unfortunately this one was kinda disappointing.
For one thing, this book got dull very fast. It's hard for this book to drag on since its only 200 comic pages, but I felt very bored. The whole book consists of Greg complaining about how terrible his school is. The problem is that his complaining is not very funny. Hearing all the problems about underfunded schools is just kind of sad.
And usually the situations Greg gets into are a bit crazy, but this school's problems are too ridiculous for even me to believe.
Plus, usually it's funny to hear about Greg's antics. He wasn't really scheming or doing anything in this book. Just complaining.
A final thing I didn't appreciate. Some of the best characters are missing here:Rowley,Rodrick,Manny. This story felt lacking without the dynamic Greg has with these characters.
I'll leave a bonus star for nostalgia ,but I don't think I will be checking out any new Wimpy Kid books at this point.

I haven't read diary of a wimpy kid in FOREVER. I really like how some classic characters like Albert Sandy and Alex Aruda were fairly prominent, but I do wish there was more Rowley (and it would've been great if characters like Bryce Hall and Holly Hills were mentioned, it kind of feels like they've been forgotten).
