I'm going for a generic 3 review for this series, balancing the 2 stars (at best) from me and the 4-5 stars from my 7 year old (and my 10 year old who also likes them). My 7 year old has decided he wants to read them all in order so here we are (and here in fact is the end, at least until the next one is released).
Look, Greg is the worst - unpleasant, selfish, mean, constantly moping - he shouldn't be the main character - that should clearly be Rowley with Greg as the sidekick. His home life seems bleak and the situations he finds himself in are a working demonstration of karmic response to his behaviour.
But, both of my boys like them and even my youngest (who is less keen on reading) will sit and pour over these himself so how can I argue with that. I'm never one for discouraging them from reading.
So, you know what you're going to get with these books, there are the occasional flashes or genuine humour along with the more prevalent schadenfreude and kids seem to like them.

Excited to read the next one which comes out in October!

It’s baffling to me that this kid is still in middle school 18(?) books later, I will continue to read them until they stop being published. This was definitely one of the better books that he’s recently published. I found it funny at parks, and it’s definitely inspired by the state of the current public school system.
I’m looking forward to the next one.

Best among the recent ones, the middle phase was boring, the principal did this, the principal did that. But the ending is good, principal for q day, the slacksville episode and the twist ending like always.
This was by far the dumbest of the series. Absolutely way too chaotic and didn’t make any sense. Also, I will admit I don’t love Rowley as much as others do, but I don’t understand how he and Greg cried at the possibility of Greg moving a few books ago, and now we never even see him?? Idk this was not Jeff Kinney’s best work
