This book is about a woman who has the power of finding things and a scary man who kidnaps children to take them to Christmasland. Chaos ensues.

Things I liked:
  • The characters were great and felt realistic. We had time to get to know and love them before anything seriously terrible happened to them.
  • The magical realism elements were really fun.
  • There was a lot of tension! I genuinely didn't know what direction the story was going to go in. There wasn't a dramatic twist or anything, but I didn't predict the ending.
  • The villains were scary. I didn't feel very scared when reading this book, but the first encounter the MC has with the villain is very stressful and tense.
  • It all felt fairly original.
  • We weren't overloaded with exposition. We slowly figured out what was going on as the characters did. I appreciated this!

Things I didn't like:
  • As can be expected in a horror novel, theres a few upsetting/disturbing scenes.
  • I get a little flustered in books when people have serious injuries and can just carry on like they're not in an absolute world of pain. Again, this seems typical in horror/thriller novels.

There were things about this book I loved and things that I hated. I loved the characters and the story, but the way the author writes really got to me. Why would a child hold another child "like a lover"? Why did he have Lou and Vic fall in love when he was 20 and she was 16? Why did the author include a racial slur in the middle of his book? Also, if I heard one more description of sweet, kind-hearted Lou as a fatty fat fat landwhale manatee fatso, I might have had a stroke. Honestly, I'm fine with having a character's fatness be an issue or struggle, but the author described this wonderful character as if he hated his guts.

There were long stretches where I enjoyed this book, but I would really struggle to recommend it to anyone.

NOS4A2 was good but at some points was too drawn out. I enjoyed the story itself, however, I don’t believe I will be reading any other books by this author.

2.5/5 DNF @ 72% - I wanted to like Joe Hill, this is the 1st book Ive ever read by him. This book had a fun initial concept, I love supernatural stuff with some random thing thrown in. The first half of the book was relatively interesting, then it just devolved. The side characters introduced after the 1st half were so uninteresting that I couldn't bring myself to give a s*** about them. And then worst: it just got boring. I rarely dont finsh a book, and I just couldn't pick it up again. Im only 200 pages away from the end and its going to back to the used book store

I just finished N0S4A2 by Joe Hill.... The ending was very satisfying, emotional and also VERY wholesome. One word to describe this book: wow. I loved this book so much and I didn't want to leave that world. It has left me thinking "what do I do now" and "I want to read it again right now". It was so good and right up my street, it had me hooked at the first line like holy shit. I've not read a horror this good in a while

NOS4A2 wasn’t without its flaws; the blatant misogyny of the antagonists not having any direct connection to the story besides making the antagonists more dislikable REALLY bugged me, as did the blatant fatphobia.

I can’t say that I didn’t have a fun time reading this, though. The great thing about the book’s length is that it’s so dense that it’s easy to forget about the flaws until they pop up again. Its length intimidated me, but I whipped through it SO quickly.

I did overall enjoy this book. The story is definitely unique and not like anything I've read before. However, it is so long, much too long in my opinion. Whatever tension was built up quickly fizzled out because it took so long to get to the meat of the story. When things were happening the descriptions were definitely image-inducing and gruesome. Many had me squirming in my chair. But when it came to the fear and anxiety I want to feel for characters in a horror story there just wasn't any.

Not the best horror book I've read but definitely not the worst either.
