I was really hoping to love this book, but I just didn’t.
It certainly wasn’t a bad book, and I really liked the cool world building elements, and the deep “lore” like the Bene Gesserit and whatnot.
I felt like maybe the pacing / writing style just wasn’t my thing (the first half takes the span of two weeks, and the second skips across a couple decades), and I didn’t really feel much for any of the characters.

Superb worldbuilding and such precise writing!
The afterword revealed that frank herbert sometimes wrote a chapter in verse before converting it to prose and retaining the feeling of the poem and it shows.
Paul’s strengths and weaknesses both develop in a really fluid way in response to the plot and although Dune could be read as a stand-alone, the tension between his virtues and his flaws come to such an acute summit that you simple know his story does not stop at the end of the first book.

This book whips, kinda slow point like 65% of the way through or so but other than that it rocked. Can’t miss a beat with it or you’ll be lost forever.
Unfortunately all I could think of the whole time was how masterful Denis Villeneuve's adaptation is.

Understood the cultural significance but could not finish it. Read books that did it better that set obviously built on this idea later on.
I can acknowledge that this is objectively a phenomenal book, I can appreciate the authors skill in weaving this complex world, characters and their political motivations in a way that still stands the test of time today. I can appreciate the questions this raises with corruption, manipulation, ‘the cursed chosen one’ elements. But… I can’t honestly say I loved my time reading this one.
Dune is like a museum your parents drag you to when you are too young to appreciate it. It’s impressive but fun? Not for me.
