This IS a viable classic. I just have terrible 7th grade memories of being forced to read this book against my will and interest at the time.

I read this in high school, and it was one of the few books in my British Lit class that I actually enjoyed. It was good to read it again after all these years.
7/1/2021: I'm so glad that I read this again as an adult, and could look at it with an adult's eyes. While I enjoyed this in high school, I look at the story now and I understand why some call it one of the greatest books of all time. Romance, drama, adventure, all of it rolled into one amazing story, with the backdrop of one of the most dramatic and terrifying eras of all - the French Revolution, when France drowned in the blood of its own people.
