*4.5 stars

This was only the second Dickens book I read, but I enjoyed this one much more than Great Expectations. The story is much more engaging and the characters were more enjoyable to read about.

It's more maudlin than I remembered. Dickens takes a while to get to his point, and he has not sympathy for the French revolutionaries. I think knitters are painted with tar, too.

I forgot how much I liked that it all ties together in the end. The plot really picks up speed in the last third of the book. Still a favorite.

Read this book when I was in the eighth grade and didn't like it much then. And to be honest, I still don't like it. This is my least favorite of Dickens' novels.

One of the most satisfying books I have ever read. Dickens is a master storyteller. The end just broke me apart.

I just can't imagine why they give this to high school students. Being a grownup improves it out of all recognition.

Starts slow, but once you get into, the story moves fast and is engaging.
