If you liked IT you’ll enjoy this one too!

I was kind of shocked after seeing all the positive reviews, so maybe it’s me…

The trope of outcast kids in a bygone era, one is developmentally challenged but has uncanny abilities, etc is just so overdone. Also it’s been used in much better ways: “It” and “Dreamcatcher” by Stephen King & “Summer of Night” by Dan Simmons for a few examples.
This really felt like the “lite” copycat of those books. The characters were so-so, the writing was stagnant on and off (mostly on), and I skipped ahead to any interesting parts.

Now, there were some interesting parts: the history of the collapsed mine & the familial horrors Jessie and Dennis experienced. These well written sections that made me want to keep reading were far and few between, so to keep going was a definite chore.

Hopefully I can find a Malfi book I actually like as so far it’s been 0 for 2.

Wow. What a story. I went back and forth between 3 stars, to 4 stars, to 5 stars, and back and forth.

This reminded me of a mash up of IT, The Outsider, and the Night Circus. What a weird and wild ride. So many layers and different of a mystery, childhood trauma, escapism, and the supernatural!

I also live so much that they were in Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana. Since this is my main stomping ground I felt even more connected to the story.
