It wasn't the best horror book I read but wasn't the worst either. There's a fair mix of supernatural horror and just pure human brutality horror, which for me didn't always work and felt a bit clunky at times. There's a lot of gore and the murder scenes are described with worrying detail.. I did at some point struggle to tolerate it and I'm not usually too squeamish.

Black Mouth leans hard on Stephen King's It for inspiration, and it mostly works. The protagonist, a semi-recovering alcoholic, is interesting enough as a narrator, and his team of friends who take on a (maybe) supernatural evil in his hometown make this story work. I found myself wishing the book would be longer–not necessarily because I wanted to read more of it, but because I felt like the book needed some room to breathe and liven the characters a bit. Some parts felt a little underdeveloped due to the length of the book. Black Mouth is certainly an economic horror. It's the story of a town whose one industry has collapsed quite literally. Addiction runs rampant, and residents long to escape. It's not too terribly hard to draw comparisons between the man with the eye patch and some politicians today–performers who seek power in endearing themselves to those bearing the brunt of the systems they seek to exploit. That's about as deep into this book as I'm willing to go. A fun read.
