Review: In the late 90s, four children, brothers Jamie and Dennis, & friends, Clay and Mia, met a mysterious man who called himself the Magician. Wowing them with magic. He leads them to do something horrific in order to have "magic" like him.
Twenty years later, the group went their own ways. A shadow has been chasing them. Especially, Jamie. Who saw a glimpse of what the "Magician" truly looked like.
Mia sees the magician in a crowd at a carnival and brings the group back together to find him and stop him once and for all.
Meanwhile, another person who encountered the Magician as a child begins to hunt the group.
A story seeped in childhood trauma. Dark.
To me, it has a little of Stephen King's It and Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes. The story never lets up as it goes. Consistently has an earie vibe. Which I'm beginning to see is Malfi's style.
Brutal in spots. One scene of animal cruelty was difficult to listen to.
It's a mix of supernatural horror and a monster that could be all too real.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this. Great horror story.

Stephena Kinga nejak zasadne moc nemusim. Mam od neho precitanych par knih, niektore sa mi pacili viac, ine menej, ale vzdy to u mna oscilovalo niekde okolo priemeru (mozno s vynimkou Salem's Lot). O Ronaldovi Malfim sa hovori, ze je to konecne moderny hororovy autor na Kingovej urovni.
Porovnania s Kingom su pochopitelne uz po prvych par kapitolach. Minimalne v prvej polovici je kniha neoddiskutovatelne inspirovana "To" a aj ked neskor su tie podobnosti uz mensie, uplne nevymiznu nikdy.
Co teda samozrejme nie je negativum. Len je naozaj jasne, kde autor berie inspiraciu. Na druhu stranu ale musim povedat, ze ma kniha bavila. Viac, nez som cakal. Viac, nez vacsina toho, co som precital od Kinga.
Vyborne postavy, prijemne temna atmosfera, zo zaciatku aj trochu strasidelna (neskor uz ani moc nie). Pribeh celkom standardny, ale minimalne jeden zvrat celkom necakany.
Naozaj dobry moderny horor, urcite budem od Malfiho chciet precitat viac (pozeram najma na Come With Me, Bone White a Small Town Horror).

loved this so much, all the layers… i didn’t particularly like a thing that happened at the end, but i loved my time with this book so i’m not complaining too much and it still gets 5 stars!
