Harley and her father arrive in Jamaica for yet another job her father has to complete. This time, he is looking for the Blue Pearl, a stone that has been lost for hundreds of years and it is rumored to not be on land or it’ll cause devastation. One that pirates and the people in Jamaica experienced in the 1600s. Upon their arrival, Harley is met with a note telling her to meet someone and when she gets there, she finds out she has to get to the pearl before the archaeologists to prevent disaster. Now it’s a race to see who gets to the pearl first. Will it be the archaeologists or S.M.A.L.L.?
There was so much to love about this book. I think that I was already hooked from the first adventure and had high expectations for this one. It did not disappoint, in fact it exceeded my expectations. I love the activity kit and the video series as additional content to the story that kids can access at any time. It builds on their experience. Getting them to be little detectives and explorers. Super fun!
There was an interesting and engaging introduction and setup to get everything going. It literally set the tone and showed the two sides that inevitably would be racing each other. Even cooler is the fact that this can be read in any order as it catches the reader up on what happened in the previous adventure. It had similar themes as the previous, independence. But this go round, it had an even bigger focus on wanting independence vs the overprotective parent. Harley was super relatable with her wants and needs as well as things like online school and homework. The ciphers were excellent as always and this novel felt more educational as it progressed. There was so much to take in but in a fun way! This can totally be a show on PBS or Disney.
The only thing that caught my attention was a description, Black boy. Rather than saying that, it could’ve been a Jamaican boy or something else. It’s small and probably nothing to it, but it just felt a bit off when I read it.
The illustrations were even better in this round of adventures. The illustrations and maps were more advanced than the previous and it added so much more to the story. The details inside the images that were available gave extra information to the readers. I really loved the Port Royal Harbour, Jamaica map with the facts section. That’s great for visual learners and provides everyone an enhanced experience. Fantastic!
This is an excellent book for independent readers ages 8-12 and assisted readers ages 6-7. It’d be a fun experience for the family as well. Anyone who has an interest in history, mystery and adventure with pirates would love this! Additionally, schools, libraries, and homeschools (3rd grade and up) would enjoy this book’s experiences as well as the additional material that comes with it. With the history and ciphers, the kids will learn lots and be entertained.

Sometimes you just want a quick read that is clever and fun at the same time. This series is obviously geared towards kids; however, I thoroughly enjoy them. Well written, fun, and still a good mystery, this is a series I will continue to read.
Harley James is the daughter of famed archaeologist, Russell James and he is off on another adventure, this time to Port Royal, Jamaica. Harley and her trusted dog Daisy are along for the ride too and you just never know what they're going to get into.
Port Royal is home to a famed sunken pirate city. Back in 1692, there was a massive earthquake and part of the city sunk into the ocean, intact. The youngest pirate on record, Johnny King was there, and he wrote down the events in his diary that now resides in the local museum. The locals have a legend about a blue pearl they all fear. Legend has it that if the pearl is allowed on land terrible things will happen. Harley is part of a society called S.M.A.L.L. or the Society of Mysterious Artifacts. Legends and Lore. They have sent her information on this legend and Harley must use her codebreaking expertise to uncover the truth about the pearl and stop the rest of the city from being destroyed.
This is a fantastic series for kids and adults alike. The characters are fun, smart and believable. The chapters are short yet entertaining and I definitely found myself quickly turning the pages to see if Harley could break the code in time. I look forward to the next book. I received this book free from Booksirens for an honest review.
